Facts You Need to Know about Gutters

Roofs due to their nature collect a lot of rain water. Gutters help to channel this water to drains and downspouts. If rainwater is allowed to stagnate on the roof, it can cause roof damage. Outlined are some important facts that you should know about gutters.

Style

Gutters can be made in different styles and designs. This depends on the home design. The most common styles that often match with many home designs are K style gutters. K style gutters are cost friendly and easy to install. For an upscale urban look, half round gutters are best suit. Traditional half round gutters also complete a good vintage look of traditional house designs

Half round gutters are easy to maintain since they do not clog easily. This also makes them durable. They are also the easiest types to clean because of their open structure.

Gutter Maintenance

Half round gutters are more prone to corrosion and damage compared to other types of gutters. To maximise the long-life of your half round gutter, debris and leaves clog should be cleared at least thrice a year. Any leaks should be sealed by caulking. Half round gutters can be destroyed by stagnant water. Stagnant water on the gutters causes decay and growth of algae in the long run. To prevent this, the slanting edge of the gutter should be properly maintained. Any other drainage parts like pipes should also be unclogged to prevent water stagnation on the gutter. A well maintained gutter also increases the long-life of the roof. Maintenance also prevents overflowing of gutters which can stain walls and windows.

Gutter Protection

All types of gutters can easily be destroyed by storms and bad weather. Too much force can bend and dislodge the gutters. Exposed gutters are likely to get damaged.  Gutters should be protected from bad weather by installation of guards, screens and strainers. Guards prevent clogging of debris in the gutter. Clogging adds weight on the gutter thereby making it more susceptible to damage

Gutter Materials

Gutters can be made from different materials. However, aluminum is the most commonly used material.  This is because of its durability and costs less. Although copper is slightly expensive, it makes good gutters too due to its resistance and attractive color. Aluminum is easily corroded. As a result, aluminum gutters should be galvanised with zinc or copper before installation. Gutters should also be painted to prevent rust and to match with the house paint.
